Game Report:
SKOPE Canterbury Tactix lost their opportunity to remain the only undefeated team in the competition after losing to Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel.
In the other Monday night fixture, the Queensland Firebirds sent an ominous warning to the competition crushing the Suzuki Pulse by 28 goals, the biggest win of the season.
Over six thousand fans packed the Westpac Arena in Christchurch to see if their beloved Tactix could sweep aside their fierce southern rivals and claim pole position on the points table.
But such is the tightness of the new ANZ Championship, with results going every which way, it was Steel that sent out a clear message to take a 51-42 victory.
After setting up the match with an early two-goal break at the end of the first quarter, Steel continued to gather momentum and outclass their higher-ranked opposition. Steel`s shooting combination of Daneka Wipiiti and Megan Dehn found its rhythm and proved to be more than a handful for theTactix backline, who made countless changes in an effort to halt Steel`s onslaught.
Dehn`s ability to split the home side`s defence allowed Wipiiti to inflict serious damage in the circle, ending the match with a game- high 38 goals.
Down the other end there was no holding back in the clash between Tactix shooter Jodi Brown and Steel enforcer Megan Hutton, with Hutton making life extremely difficult for her opponent.
Steel managed to regain their composure and push out their lead to five goals at the main break and then extend it to a further nine going into the final quarter.
Scrappy, error-ridden netball plagued Tactix in the final term as they watched their unblemished record come to an abrupt and disappointing end.
Steel, on the other hand, were never short of drive and assertive attack for the entirety of the contest, with Liana Barrett-Chase and Jenny-May Coffin providing countless opportunities for their shooters.
With both teams shooting at similar percentages, it was Steel`s that became the telling factor, securing their second win of the season.
