NSW Swifts hosted West Coast Fever in Sydney in Round 7. Both sides were coming of some disappointing results in recent weeks and desperate for the win. The Swifts had described the clash as redemption day, and it began in that manner.
The game was a tough and physical encounter with a willing contest between Larrissa Willcox and Susan Pratley unfolding. Caitlin Bassett was on song for the Fever scoring all nine of her attempts but the Swifts managed to gain more of the ball and held a three goal lead at the first break, 14-11.
English import Karen Atkinson left the game in the second term with Fever captain Stacey Rosman entering the mix at wing attack. Both sides continued to trade goals with a dogged Fever drawing level in the early stages.
In a rare occurrence the match was being dominated by the attackers going on an intercept spree. With numerous turnovers from both sides it was Fever who made better use of their opportunities. Fever, led largely by the efforts of Bassett, won the quarter 17-12 to lead by two at the half time and place the home side under enormous pressure.
Fever replaced Nikala Smith with Bianca Franklin at Goal Attack with the visitors quickly skipping away to a three goal lead. A trademark five minute lull from the Fever became costly as the Swifts responded to claw their way back. Susan Pratley was lethal in the circle as the home side surged to a seven goal lead going into the final term.
The Swifts thundered home in last quarter with Catherine Cox and player of the match Pratley doing the damage up front. Slight hesitation in the Fever attacking line saw the Swifts take their chances to run away with a 12 goal win posting their highest score of the season.
The win was the Swifts' first victory over an Australian team.
