Game Report:

A 56-47 win in Hamilton against the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel and a perfect shooting performance from the formidable Irene Van Dyk has catapulted the Magic to the top of the ANZ Championship ladder for the first time.

In a game that was even in many areas of the court, it came down to shooting percentages. The Steel had two more attempts to post however a 77 per cent conversion rate compared to Magic`s 95 per cent became the notable difference between the two sides.

From the outset, Magic`s defensive pressure was relentless with the backline making it near impossible for the Steel feeders to penetrate the circle edge. The opening term was an even contest before the home side slipped a gear to lead by three.

Magic hit the court running in the second quarter quickly building an eight goal lead. The Magic attacking line worked sweetly with a superb connection between all four players. Steel continued to persist and with Daneka Wipiiti on target the visitors came within six at the main break.

Steel coach Robyn Broughton introduced Te Huinga Reo Selby-Ricket to Goal Keeper in the second half for her first taste of the ANZ Championship. Her job was a big ask, to restrict the brilliance of Van Dyk. Steel were forced to work overtime for the ball as the Magic maintained the upper hand to lead 43-36 with a quarter to play.

Steel came out determined in the final term edging within four goals early in the quarter. A shot from Megan Dehn presented the opportunity to trim the deficit to three, but a Casey Williams rebound kept the Steel at bay to take a nine-goal win.
