Game Report:

The Round 10 clash between West Coast Fever and Suzuki Central Pulse in Perth this evening was cancelled at half-time due to a leak in the roof of the Challenge Stadium.

Officials spent more than thirty minutes trying to rectify the problem during the extended main break, but ultimately the game was abandoned because the water on the court was deemed dangerous for the players.

After an interrupted first half, which included Fever player Ingrid Dick slipping on the wet surface, the umpires were concerned about player welfare.

It was a frustrating end to a promising night for the West Coast Fever, which was leading 33 goals to 16 at the half-time break.
But the game was deemed a draw by match officials, in accordance with the rules of the game, after the decision was made to abandon the match.

“We appreciate the frustration this has caused to the teams and the fans,” ANZ Championship General Manager Tony Holding said.

“The rules and processes are in place to deal with the unforseen circumstances which has led to tonight’s cancellation, but we will now be working with teams and venues to try and avoid a similar situation occurring.”

Fever’s second quarter was clearly their best for the season, as they outscored the visiting Pulse 21 goals to six.

Caitlin Bassett continued her impressive form under the ring with 20 goals, but it was the performance of Bianca Franklin that was the highlight for the Fever.

Coach Sue Gaudion gave Franklin the opportunity to start the game at goal attack and she made the most of her chance, scoring 13 goals from 14 attempts. While her accuracy was excellent, it was her constant movement in attack that was particularly impressive.

Fever were naturally frustrated with the decision to abandon the match after their hot first-half form, but the performance will give the team fresh confidence for their trip to New Zealand next week to take on Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel in Dunedin.

While Pulse were clearly outplayed, they have picked up their first point of the season, in what was a frustrating night for players, fans and administrators, thanks to Perth’s wild weather.
