The NSW Swifts will kick-start their 2012 ANZ Championship Pre-Season Tournament campaign this afternoon at TECT Arena in Tauranga when they take on the West Coast Fever (5pm NZT) and hosts WBOP Magic (9pm NZT).
NSW Swifts vice-captain and shooter Susan Pratley says the team is keen to get out on court and test themselves against other teams, in particular their New Zealand rivals.
“I’m most interested to see how the New Zealand teams are shaping up. In saying that, there’s been a bit of player movement across the competition so it’ll be good to see how the combinations are looking and also what each team has in their bag of tricks,” Pratley said.
After a day of travel on Thursday, the NSW Swifts were keen to have a run this morning in a training session before the games get underway tonight.
“We had a big day of travel yesterday and a hit-out this morning. It’s always good to have that hit-out because things can be a bit scrappy after some travel,” Pratley said.
“We’ve had a tough pre-season. There have been a lot of hours put in on the training court and in the gym, so to get here and see the other teams is kind of refreshing as it means that the season is getting closer.”
For Pratley, the pre-season matches are an opportunity to build new combinations in the circle with her shooting partners Kimberly Borger, Carla Dziwoki and Amorette Wild.
“It’s pre-season so we’re still testing out combinations and the new skills that we’ve been working on. It’s not necessarily the wins we’re after, it’s more to see how we go with the players around us,” she said.
“For me personally, it’s a different shooting line that I’m still learning to play with and the game understanding between each of us is growing every time we hit the court.”
