Defender Diaries with Sam
You can sense how much Sam May, or Mayo as she is known to her team-mates, cherishes her time back in Swifts colours.
After playing 11 games for the NSW Swifts in 2009 and 2010, May missed out on a contract in 2011 but with steely determination put in the hard yards on the training court and during DOOLEYS State League and the Australian Netball League to catch the eye of selectors for 2012.
Her hard work has certainly started to pay off, with May saying that she feels the fittest she has ever been in her netball career.
“This year I know my body more and I know what is needed to get to the level of fitness required. Having this understanding has made a big difference to me during pre-season training,” May said.
“I’ve been getting stronger, faster and fitter every year. I really believe that as I’ve gotten older I’ve really started to understand what works for me.”
Training alongside and learning from two of international netball’s most experienced defenders is one of the highlights for May.
“It’s awesome - the strength that the defensive end has is great. Especially with Mon [Gerrard] and Son [Mkoloma] who have so much experience,” she said.
“To talk to them about what they see and think and then try to do it yourself is great. It’s a wealth of knowledge that they share with us.”
The opportunity to be back in NSW Swifts colours and on the ANZ Championship stage is one that May is looking forward to come the season opener in Adelaide on Saturday 31 March.
“To be given the opportunity to come back and play again is awesome; I’m not going to waste that opportunity. I’m looking forward to stepping up week-in week-out and representing the red.”
