NSW SWIFTS AIM FOR A RECORD SIX WINS IN A ROW

7pm, Monday 30 June 2008
Vodafone Arena, Melbourne
Round 13 ANZ Championship

When the NSW Swifts take to the court against the Melbourne Vixens in round 13 of the ANZ Championship at Vodafone Arena on Monday night, they will be aiming for their sixth consecutive victory; a record for the ANZ Championship.

This match will have a significant bearing on the final ladder positions, with both teams sitting on 16 points (separated by percentage) with the winner likely to secure second place.

The last time the NSW Swifts met the Vixens was in round 5 when the Vixens silenced the Newcastle crowd to defeat the Swifts by one goal in a nail-biter.

Coming off an excellent performance in round 12 against the Adelaide Thunderbirds, the NSW Swifts will be looking to reverse the result from their round 5 clash and secure a finals berth, and perhaps a home semi-final.

The NSW Swifts shooting combination of Susan Pratley and Cath Cox have been in sensational form, shooting at a remarkable 83.4%; the fourth highest in the league. This week they will face another tough defensive unit lead by World Champions, Bianca Chatfield and Julie Prendergast.

The mid-court tussle will be an intriguing one and could hold the key to victory. For the Vixens, Natasha Chokljat has been a focal point in their recent string of victories, whilst for the NSW Swifts, Kim Green was a dominate force in shutting down Natalie von Bertouch in their victory over the Thunderbirds.

Coupled with strong defense, this NSW Swifts outfit is proving to be a formidable combination with their on-court tenacity being a key ingredient to their success.

“Last week was a positive change for us – leading from the front and maintaining that lead instead of having to come from behind,” said NSW Swifts coach, Julie Fitzgerald.

“This week our start will be crucial. We can’t afford to throw the ball away and give them easy possession.”

With the inaugural ANZ Championship on the line and finals only two rounds away, a win for both teams will be crucial to securing a finals berth, and perhaps a home semi final.
